Frequently asked questions

What is Benshi?
Benshi is a movie recommendation tool that finds films you haven't seen based on your Letterboxd lists or a few seed movies you pick. It infers intent (genre, actor, location, setting, arc) and surfaces on-theme recommendations.
How does Benshi work?
Paste a Letterboxd list URL (any list, your films page, or rated page) or search for a few favorite movies as seeds. Benshi uses TMDb data, keyword matching, and semantic similarity to recommend movies that fit the theme.
What Letterboxd URLs can I use?
Any public Letterboxd list URL, your films page (letterboxd.com/username/films/), or a rated page (e.g. letterboxd.com/username/films/rated/4.5/). Private lists require the list to be public.
Where do IMDb and Metascore ratings come from?
IMDb ratings are fetched from imdbapi.dev. Metascores are scraped from Metacritic and cached for fast repeat lookups. Both are displayed when available.
Can I export recommendations to Letterboxd?
Yes. After getting recommendations, use the Export CSV button to download a CSV. You can then import it into Letterboxd via their list import feature.
